The island
Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) is situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa, Gran Canaria enjoys one of the best climates in the world (subtropical climate), with mild temperatures all year round. It has a population of around 820,000 people (almost half of whom live in the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and has a total area of 1,560 square kilometres. It is of volcanic origin and remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain and Europe.
The island is a fantastic family destination with almost 60 kilometres of beaches and a part of it declared a Biosphere Reserve (western part). It is a miniature continent, where you will find a variety of landscapes that make every day special. Visit the impressive volcanic mountains, go whale watching (dolphin watching), go hiking in the pine forests and a multitude of hiking trails, have fun in a water park, stroll through the shopping streets or visit museums or just relax on a beautiful golden sandy beach.
A well-marked network of tracks and trails lead to nature reserves on foot or by bicycle. With more than twenty spots with excellent conditions for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing Gran Canaria is a perfect destination for water sports as well. Lovers of scuba diving and underwater photography will be impressed by the beauty of the marine life; with many wrecks from large shipwrecks; many protected coasts and coves; night dives; boat dives and snorkelling.
If golf is your game, you won't be disappointed, with ten magnificent courses, all designed by top designers, the island is a golfer's paradise, whether you are a beginner or an aspiring champion. The Canarian cuisine is excellent and the local wine is well worth a try.
There are interesting and historic cities and a multitude of villages to visit: the city of Las Palmas de GC, Telde, Teror, Tejeda, Arucas, Agüimes, Agaete, etc. all of them full of charm. It is an island of sudden changes in the landscape from the great beaches and sand dunes to the rich agriculture, to the rugged mountains to the quiet village squares.
Some areas of Gran Canaria have been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Gran Canaria Rural
Gran Canaria is a beautiful island with friendly people and lush landscapes. Unfortunately, many tourists do not see them, because most of the hotels are close to the sea. Those more independent travellers like to stay in wonderful accommodations in rural houses, villas and fincas to be away from mass tourism and in contact with nature and landscape.
